Artelys Powers the Launch of CorNet’s Common Grid Model (CGM) Service
Launched in October 2021, the CorNet program is a collaboration between Coreso, TSCNET, and key European energy sector stakeholders. Its goal is to design and implement the RCC Service Platform to support Europe’s power grid operations, optimizing coordination and cost efficiency through standardization, automation, open platforms, and process orchestration.
Artelys is proud to announce its contribution to a major milestone in European electricity grid coordination: the successful go-live of the Common Grid Model (CGM) on December 1, 2024. As part of the CorNet program, this achievement represents a significant step towards enhancing operational efficiency and security in Europe’s power grid, enabling better coordination across Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Regional Coordination Centers (RCCs).
Artelys’ Role: Developing the Common European Merging Function (EMF)
Artelys developed the Common European Merging Function (EMF), which consolidates individual grid models (IGMs) from TSOs into a unified Common Grid Model (CGM). Our contributions include:
- EMF tool: Merging IGMs into a seamless CGM.
- Computation modules: Tools for load flow analysis and scaling.
- Open-source expertise: Using PowSyBl Open Load Flow.
Why the CGM Matters
The Common Grid Model serves as a cornerstone for RCC processes, supporting tasks such as validation of IGMs by ensuring the quality and plausibility of individual models submitted by TSOs, model integration by merging IGMs into a comprehensive CGM for various operational timestamps, continuous improvement by identifying and implementing enhancements to current models, and publication of updated CGMs to provide consistent and accurate network representations for operational planning. The CGM, built using the harmonized CIM-CGMES format and supported by ENTSO-E’s Operational Planning Data Environment (OPDE), is a pivotal tool for cross-border energy coordination and security analysis.
