Artelys compared the compensation mechanisms available for hydropower across global electricity markets in collaboration with CEATI
The report, available to CEATI Hydropower Operations Planning & Water Management members, offers hydropower managers a structured overview of how hydro assets can be compensated under different market designs across three continents, covering energy, capacity, and ancillary service products. It also includes a Data Explorer tool developed by the Artelys team, aggregating years of granular pricing and energy data in an intuitive interface. The tool enables side-by-side comparisons of prices by product type and highlights each market’s underlying philosophy with key insights and recommendations for hydro utilities.

A practical benchmarking for hydropower decision-makers
The study was designed to address a concrete challenge faced by hydropower managers: understanding how to optimize revenues across markets with very different compensation structures. To that end, Artelys compiled and structured data from multiple jurisdictions, providing a clear and comparable view of available revenue streams.
The Data Explorer component allows users to navigate years of historical market data and draw actionable conclusions about how hydropower can be positioned and remunerated in each market context.
Artelys thanks CEATI for their trust in leading this initiative. The findings were presented at the Hydropower Conference in Palm Springs in March 2025 attended by Artelys’ experts to discuss the findings of the report and its implications with hydropower executives.
