For several power system operators, Artelys configured the Artelys Crystal Energy Planner Software to suit their needs, including constraints definitions, criteria to be taken into account (transmission, ramp, reserve, etc.), prototyping and evaluation of the solution, software integration and user training.

Joint management of energy production and financial assets
For a European energy operator, Artelys integrated Risk Manager software into the market operations, taking the internal risk policy into account. Artelys provided training on the software to users.

For a refinery, Artelys provided optimized strategies for steam production and buy/sell of electricity on spot markets. The strategies comply with all of the operational and business constraints of the industrial system.

For an electrical power transmission network operator, Artelys developed a global optimization methodology for the network, and contributed to defining incentive pricing policies to support the existing long-term plan. Risk analyses and investment studies were carried out in the presence of uncertainties.

Optimal management of a network
As part of the European iTesla R&D project, Artelys is working with several TSOs on the development of a new security assessment tool to improve network operations. Artelys is in charge of solving large-scale AC-OPF (power flow calculations with alternating voltages and currents) as well as running security analyses.

Security and vulnerability analysis
For a transmission network operator, Artelys carried out a couple of quantitative risk analysis studies regarding security of supply at the sub-station level, taking demand uncertainty and the possibility of a network component being out of service into account.

For a consortium of industries, Artelys studied the economic and environmental advantages of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) intercontinental interconnections. This analysis is based on modeling production and transmission in the power system.

Evaluation of energy policies
For the European Commission’s Directorate-General of Energy, Artelys is developing METIS software and carrying out studies to evaluate technological solutions (interconnections, storage, smart grids, power-heat-gas synergies, etc.) and market designs (market coupling, intraday markets, etc.) in order to facilitate the integration of renewables and to improve security of supply. Local master plans: optimize investments and energy policies
For a group of municipalities and various major cities, Artelys is assisting the region and its partners in the creation of an energy master plan with the aim of establishing an energy system that looks forward as far as 2020 and 2030. This action plan is based on the calibration of a complete hour-by-hour energy model for the region (covering consumption, production and networks). The overview of the energy system and the community planning projects are analyzed; then, scenarios of investments and energy policies are developed and assessed.

For a region, Artelys has analyzed the economic and environmental impacts of an energy policy aiming at replacing electric heating and cooling appliances by systems using natural gas or gas and electricity (hybrid systems).

For a group of municipalities and various major cities, Artelys is assisting the region and its partners in the creation of an energy master plan with the aim of establishing an energy system that looks forward as far as 2020 and 2030.
