INTERNSHIP

Energy modeling internship

join Artelys

Artelys is a fast-growing international company specializing in energy, optimization and decision support. Artelys develops its own software suite to model energy systems (Crystal Super Grid) or optimize the use of energy producer assets, (Crystal Energy Planner).

Its subsidiary Artelys Canada, based in Montreal since 2013, carries out projects and prospective studies mainly for major energy players. Joining Artelys Canada means above all joining a dynamic, motivated team, a stimulating work environment and taking part in varied, exciting and topical projects.

For example, the company is working with major North American energy producers on optimizing the operational planning of their hydroelectric power plants. Numerous studies have been carried out in North America on the new challenges associated with the energy transition and the move towards low-carbon systems.  Finally, Artelys Canada carries out R&D projects with the aim of developing its tools: the team is currently working on modeling electricity networks and markets in order to measure the impact of different scenarios integrating hydrogen in North America.

Description

As part of an R&D project with international partners and using the supply-demand balance models developed by Artelys, the intern, with the support of his/her supervisor, will take part in extending Artelys’ current electricity simulation model to obtain a complete Canada-wide model covering electricity and hydrogen. Particular attention will be paid to the remuneration conditions of various production technologies or flexibility solutions. He/she will be part of a team of modeling engineers and economic analysts specialized in the energy sector.

Working in close collaboration with other team members, the intern will:

  • Contribute to the research and analysis of prospective case studies
  • Contribute to the definition of technical and economic parameters, including production costs
  • Contribute to enriching the models used by Artelys to simulate and optimize energy system operations
  • Contribute to the drafting of study reports (presentations and interactions with the customer possible).

Candidates can refer to the studies published by Artelys to get an intial idea of the type of projects the intern will be working on.

Profile required

As a 2nd cycle engineering student, you are interested in the major changes taking place in the energy system and have a good knowledge of mathematical modeling. You would like to apply your technical skills in mathematics/computing to quantitative economic analyses of the energy system. Curious, rigorous and passionate, you show initiative and imagination. You are a team player.

Skills required:

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering,  power engineering, mathematics or a related subject
  • Knowledge of electrical system economics
  • Mathematical modeling. Good knowledge of linear programming is a plus
  • Programming skills – Python an asset
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Fluent French and English

Conditions

The internship will take place over a period of 4 to 6 months, starting in May 2024. The internship will take place in our offices in downtown Montreal, Canada.
