Storage cycles (Number of cycles)#

indexed by: asset, energy, node, technology and test case

Description#

This KPI computes the equivalent number of full discharge cycles of each cycle storage unit based on its production over the entire simulation, its discharge capacity, and its output efficiency.

This KPI is used to analyse the storage use of an asset. An asset with a large number of cycles is a fairly short-term storage asset or one with a small storage size, whereas an asset with a short number of storage cycles is a more long-term/seasonal storage asset, or one with a very large storage capacity.

This indicator can also be essential for batteries in estimating the degradation of their capacity or estimating their lifetime.

Calculation#

The equation below is valid for any realization and is therefore implicitly indexed by test case.

Let be \(x_{a, e, n}\) the number of storage cycles of a given asset \(a\), energy \(e\) and node \(n\). Technology is directly deduced from the asset. We can then express \(x_{a, e, n}\) as:

\[x_{a, e, n} = \frac{1}{N_h * s_{a, e, n} * \eta^{output}_{a, e, n}} * \sum_{t} p_{a, e, n}(t)\]

with \(s_{a, e, n}\) the energy storage capacity of the storage asset, as computed in the KPI Energy storage capacities and \(\eta^{output}_{a, e, n}\) the output efficiency of asset \(a\).

Calculation hint

The calculation of this indicator takes into account the output efficiency \(\eta^{output}_{a, e, n}\), so that the energy produced by the storage is not taken into account, but rather all the energy that has been stored (including losses).

Indexing#

  • The asset index refers to the name of the asset

  • The energy index is the energy consumes by the asset

  • The node index of this KPI refers to the node in which the asset produces

  • The technology index refers to the technology type of the asset

  • The test case index corresponds the test case of the realization variables and parameters are taken from
