Thanks to its innovative optimization platform, Artelys Crystal, Artelys has carried out a coupled analysis of the interconnected European power and gas systems. The study highlights that the integration of gas and electricity systems and demand-side management lead to a significant reduction of the need for investments in gas infrastructure to ensure security of supply. To a large extent, this reduction comes from an optimal leveraging of the synergies between gas and power systems: in case of difficulties in the gas transmission system, gas-based power generation can be done in areas with less gas congestion risks and electricity is then imported using existing electricity transmission lines.

This study was commissioned by the European Climate Foundation, conducted by Artelys, Element Energy and Climact and overseen by a consortium of organizations including E3G, Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, Agora Energiewende and WWF.
