In a study carried out for Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) together with Compass Lexecon, Artelys delivered the multi-energy system modelling work underpinning the assessment of underground gas storage (UGS) needs and system and resilience under security of supply shocks towards 2030 and 2040.

The report has been published in March 2026, with a launch event organised by GIE.

A multi-energy modelling framework built to test resilience

Artelys performed the quantitative analysis using Artelys Crystal Super Grid, a state-of-the-art modelling platform designed to capture complex interdepencies between methane, electricity and hydrogen systems. The modelling represents major flexibility options across all vectors and simulates the European system at hourly resolution over full gas years, with a national (gas) or bidding zone (electricity) geographical resolution.

The assessment focuses on 2030 and 2040, building on the TYNDP 2024 NT+ scenario and a deviation scenario used to stress-test the system under slower electrification uptake (slower methane demand decline). To quantify resilience, Artelys has evaluated the impacts of three security-of-supply stress conditions: a harsh winter (based on historical climate conditions), a LNG supply reduction, and a Norwegian supply reduction.

The specificities of UGS are well-captured as the model is based on AGSI datasets and reflect available capacities (working gas volume, injection and withdrawal capacities) per type of UGS (salt caverns, depleted gas fields, aquifers) at national level, taking into account the impact of storage level on injection and withdrawal capacity. This detailed setup is specifically suited to representing storage operation dynamics.

Key findings: storage remains essential, especially under stress

The modelling shows that while the drivers of gas system operation evolve with decarbonisation, UGS remains a critical flexibility asset for Europe’s energy system, not only for methane adequacy, but also for overall resilience in an increasingly interconnected methane-electricity-hydrogen landscape.

In the NT+ scenario, seasonal flexibility services remain broadly stable compared to recent years, with similar operational patterns.

The study also quantifies how storage supports peak deliverability and system robustness under shocks. Between 2030-2040 and NT+2040, annual consumption decreases by 23% and daily consumption peaks by 12%, while UGS peak withdrawal supply increases by 15%, as import capacity contribution share decrease amid lower annual consumption volume. In particular, the role of UGS to support electricity security of supply increases, as peak daily methane demand for power generation is 10.7 TWh/day in NT+2040, while it was 5 TWh/day in 2021.

In stress situations, deliverability margins can become tight. These narrow deliverability margins could become insufficient if shocks occur late in the winter, if multiple shocks overlap, or if initial filling levels fall below 90%.

Overall this work illustrates Artelys’ ability to quantify system resilience to security of suply shocks with a robust multi-energy modelling framework, explicitly representing the interdependencies between methane, electricity and hydrogen in an integrated European energy system.

A data-driven seating system

OPTIPLACE is a seat allocation algorithm developed for OUIGO trains.The project addresses a clear need: ensuring coherent, reliable seat placement that aligns with passenger expectations, while improving seat organisation in order to free up resellable seats during periods of high demand, all while taking into account the constraints specific to rail operations.

To achieve these objectives, the module integrates directly into the reservation system. Each day, it retrieves the initial seating plan for trains at D+4, optimises it according to several criteria, and then uploads the new proposal just before tickets are sent to passengers.

The reservation system then takes over again to handle new bookings up to departure, relying on the optimised seating plan generated by OPTIPLACE.

Towards more coherent and industrialised passenger seating

Thanks to this process, OPTIPLACE ensures more coherent, smooth and balanced seating across the trainsets, while incorporating the operational preferences defined by business teams. The project therefore helps secure and industrialise a key step in SNCF Voyageurs’ operational chain.

Since its progressive deployment in July 2024, OPTIPLACE has reached full operational scale and demonstrated its effectiveness. As of the end of August 2025, more than 15,000 trains have been optimised, including nearly 10,000 that benefited from seat release, amounting to more than 138,000 freed seats in total.

Artelys Crystal Super Grid, a state-of-the-art solution dedicated to the analysis of multi-energy systems

The evaluation of the ability of an electricity system to meet demand in multiple climatic scenarios, for various configurations of planned and unplanned outage, via Monte-Carlo simulations, leveraging refined models notably of hydro reservoirs and of cascading hydro assets, and;

The evaluation of the benefits associated with developing further interconnection capacities with neighbouring countries, for various scenarios of development of generation capacities and flexibility solutions via NTC or flow-based analyses.

By leveraging the extensive set of key performance indicators integrated into the graphical user interface, our clients are able to efficiently and robustly analyse simulation results.

Finally, thanks to the capacity expansion features of Artelys Crystal Super Grid, our clients are also able to design their own transition scenarios (e.g. with different electrification levels or different technological assumptions) and to evaluate adequacy levels and infrastructure projects in these new scenarios.

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) selected Artelys (leader), Trinomics, and Tractebel ENGIE to study solutions for ensuring the future frequency stability of the European power system. The study report was published in August 2025 by DG ENER. 

This study analyses the role of inertia and its evolution in the context of asynchronous renewable energy deployment. This work establishes a shared understanding of inertia’s role in power system stability. 

Inertia plays a key role in frequency stability of the electricity system

The fastest reserves and defence plans require a few hundred milliseconds to activate. If frequency or Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF, frequency’s derivate) exceed critical thresholds during this interval, the system risks collapse (blackout) due to the tripping of assets for their own protection. 

Inertia immediately limits RoCoF, independently of any control system, thereby preventing critical RoCoF levels from being reached before any remedial action can take place.

Grid inertia is set to decline sharply in the long term without intervention

Historically, inertia relied on the natural adjustment provided by extracting power from the kinetic energy of synchronous machines, stored in rotating machines.

With the energy transition, an increasing share of assets are connected to the grid via power electronics inverter-based resources (IBRs: photovoltaic power plants, wind turbines, batteries, …) and account for a growing proportion of instantaneous generation, replacing synchronous thermal generation. These assets are traditionally equipped with grid-following inverters and thus do not provide inertia (although grid-forming technologies associated to energy storage can). 

A significant decline in system inertia is therefore anticipated across the European power system around 2030 as analysed by ENTSO-E, with needs increasing towards 2040-2050. 

Workshop Assessment of Policy Options for Securing Inertia – May 6, 2025

Securing adequate inertia levels is a technical, regulatory and economic challenge of growing importance as Europe undertakes its energy transition

Defining the framework for inertia service provision is thus necessary for establishing the long-term foundations of the European power system’s future resilience. To this end, it is necessary to:

Assess the evolution of the European power system’s inertia requirements based on the risk levels deemed necessary to cover, and define inertia targets to securely integrate IBRs into the grid in the short- to long-term; 

Establish common parameters for inertia products in the short-term, for instance through the revision of the Requirements for Generators (RfG), in a technology-neutral manner; 

Plan inertia provision and local stability services (voltage and short-circuit levels) in an integrated manner, as solutions can be shared; 

Examine the costs, benefits, and limitations of regional inertia exchanges for the medium-long term.

Upper-bound estimates for the long-term cost of providing inertia services reach up to €4 billion per year, though significant uncertainties remain, and solutions may prove less costly. 

Enabling renewable assets and storage to effectively and rapidly contribute to maintaining the European power system’s inertia, as well as to delivering local system services, is key.

These analyses notably covered the challenges and risks associated with frequency stability in the electricity system, the definition of inertia, the specification of the physical quantities required to ensure this stability, the fundamentals determining inertia requirements and the definition of associated services. Artelys also analysed the foreseeable evolution of inertia requirements with the energy transition, as well as the existing inertia and fast reserve markets.

This version offers significant performance improvements for Hessian approximation with the limited-memory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno method, especially for large-scale problems.

• Use of Apple Accelerate Sparse Solvers Library:

Users of Mac-ARM platforms can now use Apple Accelerate’s specific solvers for sparse matrix equation systems, thereby improving performance on large-scale models.

Thanks to these improvements, Knitro 15.0 reduces solution times on continuous problems on our pooling and LP datasets by 46% and 14% respectively, compared with version 14.2. Our evaluation datasets are composed from academic and customer cases instances, with application in water networks, oil and gas, refinery processing, etc.

Knitro 15.0 is also more robust on discrete problems, with new instances solved on our MINLP convex dataset. On the latter, the primal-dual integral gap is reduced by more than 10%, demonstrating increased convergence speed and solution quality.

Introducing: Future Sight, an open source interactive data-crawling tool to create full dashboards to supplement – or – create reports and showcases.

The tool, that originally was a simple dashboard for showcasing data to stakeholders, evolved into a user-friendly bridge between the public and the scientific community, allowing anyone to easily dive into the data behind the cogs and wheels, and produce quick visualisation in a few clicks.

We had the pleasure of holding showcase sessions with members of the European Commission as well as members of the Polish government to garner feedback on how to perfect the tool for its communication purpose.

What is hiding behind the hood of this tool, is a Node / React stack in typescript, using plotly as graph library, and a clever UI allowing any user to translate simple selection inputs and checkboxes to transform their ideal charts into a data query to our partner’s database, and plotly configuration for proper customisation of the chart.
